The Uyo Local Government Council has concluded its week-long project handover across the council area with the commissioning of a fully furnished two-bedroom Compassionate Home for Mrs Grace Timothy and her husband, Joshua Timothy, in Nung Erong Ediene Community, and the handover of a 500kVA electricity substation to the people of Nung Uyo Idoro Community.
The projects formed part of a series of interventions delivered across communities, including Ikot Akpan Ediene, Nung Udoe Ediene, University of Uyo and Uyo Oku, covering rural electrification, solar-powered water facilities, market construction and compassionate housing, all aimed at improving the quality of life for residents.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Council, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, said the projects were a product of extensive needs assessment and stakeholder engagement carried out during the preparation of the 2026 Local Government Budget. He noted that the interventions align with the ARISE Agenda of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, particularly its focus on grassroots development and improved living conditions for the people.
Dr Udo explained that the Compassionate Home reflects the Governor's people-centred approach to governance and was designed to restore dignity and hope to vulnerable families. In addition to the fully furnished two-bedroom home, the beneficiary received a solar power system, a mini water facility, household items and a ₦500,000 business support grant to promote economic self-reliance.
An emotional Mrs Grace Timothy, alongside her husband, expressed profound appreciation to the Council Chairman, describing the gesture as life-changing and offering prayers for God's continued blessings upon him.
Handing over the 500kVA electricity substation to the Nung Uyo Idoro community, Dr Udo stressed that access to reliable electricity is essential for rural development, economic growth and improved living standards. He urged residents to take ownership of the facility by protecting it from vandalism and ensuring its proper maintenance.
Responding on behalf of the community, Youth Leader, Idongesit Asuquo, Village Head, Eteidung Otuekong Otobong, and other stakeholders thanked the Chairman for ending years of inadequate electricity supply and pledged to safeguard the facility for the benefit of residents and businesses.
