Residents of Uyo Local Government Area have expressed appreciation to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD, as the fourth phase of the State-wide Free Food Distribution Programme reached the area, describing the initiative as a timely intervention for vulnerable households.
The exercise, coordinated by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs in collaboration with the Akwa Ibom State Bulk Purchase Agency, saw the distribution of food items to beneficiaries in Uyo LGA, drawn from the State Social Register.
Speaking during the event on Friday, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area, Dr Uwemedimo Udo, described the programme as another demonstration of the Governor's commitment to the welfare of indigenes across the state, particularly those on the lower rungs.
“This is what true governance and true leadership should be about—caring for the weak in our society,” the chairman said. He assured the team that the distribution would be peaceful and seamless, stressing that every beneficiary would receive their share without discrimination. The chairman further pledged continued support for the administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
Addressing the gathering, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Lady Emem Ibanga, disclosed that 7,000 bags of food had been allocated to beneficiaries in Uyo Local Government Area under the fourth phase of the programme. Statewide, the commissioner disclosed that 217,000 bags of food had been distributed, primarily to the most vulnerable citizens listed on the social register.
Lady Ibanga commended the people of Uyo and the local government administration for their organisation and cooperation during previous phases of the distribution exercise, noting that Uyo had consistently maintained a peaceful and orderly process.
She recalled that the Ministry had recently distributed ₦75,000 conditional cash transfer debit cards to vulnerable residents in the area, and described these interventions as evidence that the Umo Eno administration does not merely talk about caring for the people but actively delivers on its promises.
“This is a government that cares for its people,” she stated, adding that persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups would continue to benefit from the distribution programmes.
Some beneficiaries who spoke at the event expressed gratitude to Governor Umo Eno for the food support, noting that the programme would help cushion the effects of the economic challenges. They pledged their continued support for the administration and commended the government for ensuring that vulnerable groups, including persons with disabilities, widows, the elderly, and low-income households, are not left out of its welfare programmes.
Present at the exercise were the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia; Vice Chairman of Council, Hon. Christiana Bassey; General Manager of the Akwa Ibom State Bulk Purchase Agency, Hon. Unyime Etim; Supervisors of the Uyo Local Government Council; and the Chairman of Village Youth Presidents in the State, Itai James, among others.
